Grilling on the Balcony

According to the rules of Porvoon Kodit, grilling on the balcony is only permitted with an electric grill. However, special caution must always be observed when grilling on a balcony or terrace.

Tips for fire-safe grilling:

  • Only electric grills may be used on balconies and terraces. Gas grills may be used in the yard area intended for the apartment, provided that special caution is exercised.
  • Grilling with an open flame or a charcoal grill is prohibited.
  • Grilling in the yard area is only allowed in places designated for that purpose.
  • Never leave the grill unattended – residents are always personally responsible for fire safety.
  • Keep the grill far enough away from building walls and flammable materials.
  • Keep fire extinguishing equipment, such as a fire blanket or hand extinguisher, nearby and make sure you know how to use it.
  • Check regularly that your smoke alarm is working. In the event of a malfunction, submit a maintenance request.

Charging Battery-Powered Devices

Safe charging of battery-powered devices, such as electric bicycles and e-scooters, is important. A faulty battery, improper storage, or careless charging can cause a serious fire hazard.

Tips for charging and storing battery-powered devices:

  • Batteries must be stored at normal room temperature. Batteries must not be charged or stored in freezing conditions or in direct sunlight, for example on a balcony.
  • Make sure the battery storage area has a smoke alarm and fire extinguishing equipment.
  • Only charge devices under supervision. Never charge a battery overnight.
  • Do not charge batteries in escape routes, such as stairwells or hallways.
  • Electric vehicles must be stored in the bicycle storage room. Batteries may only be charged under supervision inside your own apartment.
  • Make sure there are no flammable materials or unnecessary items near the charging area.

Stop using the battery if:

  • it becomes damaged or starts to swell
  • the battery becomes unusually hot
  • the battery makes unusual sounds
  • the battery gives off an odour or leaks

Instructions in Case of Fire

If there is a fire in your apartment:

  2. Go to the balcony or a window and make your location known by attracting attention. Call 112.
  3. If smoke starts entering the apartment, for example through the gap under the door or the mail slot, try to block the openings with wet towels or other textiles.
  4. Follow the instructions given by the authorities.
